This is an unpolished slab cut from a Fort Irwin Transitional nodule, from the Mojave Desert of Southern California. To our knowledge, the material is rare. We did not slice this one, it came to us this way, through an old collection. It is 6" x 3" at its widest points, and 6-7 mm thick. It weighs 138.3 grams, or 4.8 ounces. It looks like a complete slice of the rock. We know that, for a thunderegg collector, a complete half is desired, but this is a beautiful slice of a rare material. Note that it was photographed wet in all photos except the last two.

Mexican Snowball Agate

Polished, Domed Mexican Snowball Agate

We had this one marked as a Laguna Agate nodule, and then we thought it might actually be a Coyamito Agate, though neither quite looked as we thought they should. HOWEVER, since that point we've learned more and more, and I just noticed the back on this one. Judging from the matrix, I'm pretty sure it is actually a Mexican Snowball Agate. (No photos of the back right now, but will take some soon, or upon request if you don't see the back before I get to it!) Our understanding is that Snowballs may be weathered agate cores of fully expanded thundereggs. Please note that it is domed on the surface, the rough nodule on the back. It is approximately 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" and is between 9-19 mm in thickness. It weighs 28 grams, just less than an ounce.

This is a small thunderegg from Wiley's Well. The red mineral in the center area looks like it is just below the surface. It is 2 1/4" x 1 7/8" and 31 mm thick. It weighs 96.9 grams, or 3.4 ounces. It's polished on the face.

Polished Double Thunderegg/Geode from Wiley's Well

This is a wonderful double geode-thunderegg, I'm pretty sure, from Wiley's Well. One side has little sparkly crystals in several small areas, with a pink/purple agate, and what looks like a needle or sagenite like inclusion. The other side has a large crystal filled pocket. Not sure what all the crystals are, other than a number of nice Quartz crystals. It is about 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" and between 22 and 45 mm thick. It weighs 9.2 ounces, or 260 grams. It's polished on the face.

This is a Leadpipe Springs thunderegg, or at least part of one. It looks like it was probably just a small piece of one, polished in an awkward way, while trying to keep the gorgeous blue pattern against the red matrix. The polish is imperfect - you'll notice some scratches in a couple of the close-ups. It is about 2" x 1 1/2" and 48 mm thick. It weighs 110 grams, or 3.9 ounces. Despite the fractures in it, I think it's a pretty piece.

This is a pretty little thunderegg. Unfortunately we're not sure of the locality on this one. My first guess would be Black Rock Desert, or maybe from the Black Agate Mine area of Wiley's Well? Kind of a brick red matrix with clear and black agate, and a very small area of waterlines. It is about 1 3/4" x 2" and 14 mm thick. It weighs 53.4 grams, or 1.8 ounces.

We're not sure what type of thunderegg this one is, though I'm guessing it might be a Wileys Well location. Very neat piece (to me) with all the little details in it, including the open pocket of crystals in the center. It is about 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" and 25 mm thick. It weighs 4.3 ounces, or 124.4 grams. It is polished on the face. This is the mate to the one below, #2745.

We're not sure what type of thunderegg this one is, though I'm guessing it might be a Wileys Well location. Amethyst Thunderegg

Polished Wileys Well Thunderegg with Amethyst Crystals

This is a thunderegg (a geode) with a small pocket of light amethyst. I believe it is from the Wileys Well area, but I'm not certain and don't know which bed if so. Lots going on in this one. It's polished on the face, but notice in one of the photos, you can see a small edge that didn't polish like the rest. I didn't notice it until I saw the photo. It is about 2 5/8" x 2 5/8" and 61 mm thick. It weighs 370 grams, or 13.1 ounces.

Wileys Well Thunderegg

Polished Wileys Well Double Thunderegg Geode

This is a double Wiley's Well Thunderegg, polished on the face. It is two thundereggs formed together, and both have open pockets! When I first pulled this piece I thought the crystals on the one side were a very light amethyst. However, looking at them now, I'm not so sure. They do have a tint, but whether it is more of a light purple or almost a rose - the buyer will need to decide. Pretty piece either way. It is 3 5/8" x 2 1/4" and up to 39 mm thick. It weighs 7.6 ounces, or 215 grams.

Kofa Thunderegg

Rare Fluorescent Kofa Thunderegg (we think!)

We believe this is a rare thunderegg from the Kofa Mountains of Arizona, beautifully polished on the face. It's just a small piece, but a very neat little beauty. We are not 100% positive about the locality; we have just one old photo to compare to, and so far no one with first-hand knowledge of someone who has actually collected the material. But a 'Kofa' seems to be the most agreed-upon identification. It's a really neat piece, and as you can see from the slide show, it fluoresces a stunning intense green under short wave ultra-violet light. It is about 2 3/8" x 1 3/4" and 18 mm thick.

Oregon Thunderegg

Unpolished Oregon Thunderegg with Common Opal

This is an unpolished, sliced thunderegg, filled with what looks to me as common Opal. It looks like it has been ground down, but not actually polished. It 'sits' naturally on one side. In several of the collections we acquired, we have come across numerous sliced thundereggs. This is one of them. And while we are fairly sure it is from Oregon, we do not know which exact locality. (After showing it in a thunderegg group, we think it is Richardson's Ranch, probably Blue Bed.) It is about 3 1/2" x 3" and 1 5/8" thick. It weighs 12.6 ounces, or 355 grams.

Unpolished Oregon Thunderegg with Common Opal & Dendrites

This is another thunderegg with some common opal in it, but it also has awesome little dendrites as well. It is not polished at all. It is another of the numerous miscellaneous sliced pieces from any of the various collections we've acquired. We believe it is from Oregon, Richardson's Ranch, probably Blue Bed. It is 3 3/4" x 2 1/2" and 22-23 mm thick. It weighs 217.9 grams, or 7.6 ounces

This is a very neat unpolished Thunderegg, we think from Richardson's Rock Ranch. It is roughly 3 1/2" x 3" and about 2 1/2" thick. It weighs 600 grams, or 1 lb, 5 ozs. It is not polished, but it has had a bit of sanding already. Beautiful, colorful patterns in this one, but please note that in natural lighting, it is not as bright as it looks in the photos. Additionally, it was photographed wet in most of the photos.

This is another rare thunderegg from Opal Mountain, in the Mojave Desert of California. It is just the natural rock, sliced and unpolished. This was a thin nodule, sliced through, revealing a small area of waterlines. It is roughly 4" x 3" and only as thick as about 21 mm. It weighs 260 grams, or 9.2 ounces.

This is a Thunderegg from Wiley's Well area, polished on the face. It's filled with crystals and agate, with a flat, solid face. You'll easily notice the 'rabbit ears' about the center, but there are several other inclusions that look like they'be been kind of 'stuck' near the 'ears.' It's 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" and about 1 1/2" thick. It weighs 280 grams, or 10 ounces. A beautiful piece to add to any collection!

It's a bright red mineral that covers the crystals in this Wiley's Well thunderegg! Really a neat specimen! I can't tell you all the minerals in the center other than some beautiful Quartz crystals, but they make for a neat display! The matrix of this one has a bit of a 'turkey tail' pattern to it. It is roughly 3" x 2 3/4" and about 40 mm thick. It weighs 290 grams, or 10.3 ounces. It has a polish on the face.

This is another thunderegg from Wiley's Well. It is unpolished. Beautiful pastel colors in it - hints of green and blue, pink and purple. The very center is a very shallow pocket of tiny druse crystals, and one area looks like it might be a few water lines. It is roughly 3" x 2 1/4" and about 20 mm thick. It weighs 4.5 ounces, or 125 grams.

This is both sides of a rare, sliced thunderegg from Opal Mountain, in the Mojave Desert of California. It is just the natural rock, sliced and unpolished. While a lot of the pieces we have from this area have rough, 'difficultly-dug-out edges,' this one looks to be a mostly whole nodule. Both sides are a little less than 4" x 1 3/4 to 2" on the sliced faces, and one about 1 1/4" thick, while the larger one is 2" thick. Together they weigh 1 lb 1.5 ounces, or 495 grams.

One of the collections we acquired had a large batch of sliced, unpolished thundereggs from the Wiley's Well area. This is one from that batch. We thought this one might be from the Black Agate Mine area. However, with the help of some online groups, we have since determined and are pretty sure it came from the Potato Patch, East Bed. It is about 2 1/2" x 2" and just about 1" thick. It weighs 3.8 ounces, or 105 grams. Please note again that it is unpolished, and all but one photograph of the face were taken of it wet.

This is an awesome druse-covered, crystal-filled Berber Agate geode from Morocco! It is natural, just a broken-open geode. The edges are rough, but what an amazing beauty! It is roughly 2" x 1 3/8" x 1 1/2" and weighs 2.5 ounces, or 73 grams. If you love geodes, you will not be disappointed in this one! Again, please note that it has not been finished on the edges - just the natural, broken edge, revealing the beauty inside!

This is a Richardson's Rock Ranch Thunderegg, guessing it is probably from the Blue Bed. An awesome piece - it is at least a double thunderegg, almost looks like a triple! It has beautiful waterlines, a small pocket on one side with tiny blue druse crystals, and even a little moss! It is 4 1/2" x 3-4" and roughly 1 3/4" thick. It weighs 1 lb 10 ozs, or 750 grams. There is a polish on it enough to be able to easily see its beauty, but it looks like an incomplete polish and would be enhanced by a little more finishing. An awesome piece even as-is however!!

This Wiley's Well thunderegg is from the Cinnamon Beds I believe. It is 4 1/8" x 3 3/8" and 30-51 mm thick. It weighs 450 grams, or 1 pound. It has a few lines of blue Agate in it, but the center is an open pocket covered in tiny velvety-red druse crystals, with a few quartz crystals scattered here and there as well.

This looks like another Lead Pipe Springs thunderegg. It has a sliced face and is not polished. There are several pockets in it, the largest with some really pretty patterning. In the dry photo, you will also notice there is a fracture running through it. Still - a neat piece. It is 3" x 2" at its widest points, and up to 20 mm thick. It weighs 3.7 ounces, or 100 grams. Actual coloring is closest to how it looks on light background.
