Randsburg Scenic Picture Rock

'Scenic' Randsburg Picture Rock Faced Rough

This is a piece of rough Picture Rock, sliced on one side. It was collected from the hills behind Randsburg, an old mining town, in the Mojave Desert of California. It sits neatly on its own, and even unpolished as it is, it's a neat 'scenic' piece for display. It's roughly 7 3/4" x 2 1/2" and up to 1 1/2" thick. It weighs 1 lb, 12.9 ounces, or 820 kgs. The material isn't as hard as a jasper, but it does take a polish. 'Rand Mtn, CA' is written on it in pencil, but it should easily erase or polish off.

Randsburg Rose Rock Slab

Randsburg Picture Rock slab - a Desert Rose!

This is another piece of Picture Rock, collected from the hills behind Randsburg. The rock this slice came from had a rose-like pattern throughout most of it. This end piece only has a slight touch of the red along an edge, but some of the slices had a lot more. We gave the stone the nickname of Desert Rose because of the pattern and coloring. It will stand on it's own if thought is for display. It is 6 1/4" x 5 1/4" at its wider points, and as mentioned, it's an end piece, very thin in one top area, but mostly between 8-20 mm thick. It weighs 515 grams, or 1 lb. 2.2 ounces. It's not as hard as a jasper, but the material does take a polish.

Randsburg Rose Rock Slab

Randsburg Rose Picture Rock Slab

This is an end piece slab off of the same rock as item #2959 above, but this one has a nice area of the red 'rose' pattern. The slab overall is about 6 1/4" x 3", but the area of the red is closer to 2" x 1 1/2 to 2 3/4". It is mostly 4-5 mm thick in the red area, though as thin as about 3 mm near one edge of it. It is up to 14 mm thick along the more plain area. You can see that a little above the red area, it thins down more to a hole. It weighs 185 grams, or 6.5 ounces. As noted with the other pieces of this material, it is not as hard as jasper, but it does take a polish.

Large Picture Jasper Slab (Biggs?)

This is a slab of Picture Jasper, unpolished. We don't know what type of Jasper it is, possibly Biggs, but we don't known that for sure. It's from an old collection. It measures 6 1/2" x 4 7/8" and 6 mm thick. The lines you see look like healed fractures, but it appears to be nice and solid. Beautiful scenic patterns in this piece if you decide to use it for cabs, but a very neat piece even just as it is, polished or unpolished.

Lg China Hollow Biggs Slab

Large China Hollow Biggs Slab w/Opal and Blue Chalcedony

This is a beautiful, large piece of China Hollow Biggs Jasper. Our understanding is that it is Biggs Jasper, but not from the most common mines, though we've also seen it here and there as Picture Rock. There was an article on this material in an issue around January or February 2012, in one of the lapidary magainzes. The slabs from this specific rock have some very neat looks to them with the common white Opal and Blue Chalcedony. And while some areas look more like Jasper, it also has a couple areas with a slight translucence. It is 7 1/4" x a little less than 5 1/4" at its widest points, and just under 7 mm thick. Large Picture Rock Slab

This is a large slice of some type of Picture Rock, we don't think it's a jasper. It's very smooth on both sides and edges, it feels like it might have had a little grinding, but it is not polished. There are a few little dendrites on one end. It is roughly 5 1/2 to 7 1/4" long x 4 1/4" wide, and 9 mm thick. It weighs 14 ounces, or 400 grams. While one side is very smooth and flat, the other has a very slight ripple in it.

Large Picture Rock Slab

This is another slice of Picture Rock, we don't think it is a jasper. It feels like it has had some grining, but is not polished. Both sides are very smooth, and the edges are mostly smoth, but a few rough areas. It is not fully flat on both sides, there are a few indentations. It is about 5 to 6 7/8" long x 4 to 4 1/2" wide, and 6-7 mm thick. It weighs9.3 ounces, or 265 grams.

Biggs Picture Jasper Slab

This is a slice of Biggs Picture Jasper. It is mostly brown, and very tiny ripples in much of the slab, but one area is especially nice. That nicest pattern does not make it all the way to the back of the slab, and I can't tell how far into the slab it goes. It is about 4 3/4" x 3 1/2" at the widest points,and 5-6 mm thick. It weighs 105 grams, or 3.9 ounces.

Biggs Picture Jasper Slab

This is a slab of Biggs Picture Jasper. Beautiful pattern potential on one side, but please notice that the pattern does not go all the way through to the other side. Some of it comes through to the back, but not as nice as the front. There are a couple photos in the slide show of the edge, but we have no way to know for sure how thick the pattern actually goes in the whole slab. It is roughly 4 1/4x 3 and 9 mm thick. It weighs 140 grams, or 4.9 ounces.

China Hollow Biggs Jasper Slab with Common Opal

This is a really nice piece of China Hollow Biggs Jasper. Our understanding is that it is Biggs Jasper, but not from the most common mines, though we've also seen it here and there as Picture Rock. The slabs from this specific rock have some very neat looks to them. This one has a little blue chalcedony in a few areas of it, along with common white Opal, and lots of little dendrites. And while some areas look more like Jasper, it also has areas of Agate with a translucent quality to it. It is 5 1/4" x 2 3/4" at its wider points, and 7-8 mm thick. It weighs 4.5 ounces, or 129.6 grams.

This is a Biggs Jasper slab, an end piece. It has lots of little dendrites in it. It is a little less than 4" x 2", and tapers in thickness between a thin edge up to 12 mm thick.

Picture Jasper Rock Slab with Rolling Patterns

This is a slice of some kind of Picture Jasper or Picture Rock. My first thought was Disaster Peak, but I'm not sure that's what type it is. It has wonderful swirls and patterns in it. It is roughly 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" at its wider points, and 6 mm thick. It weighs 1.8 ounces, or 51 grams. It is closest to how it looks in the photos on the light background.

China Hollow Biggs Jasper Slab

This is another China Hollow Biggs Jasper slab. It is about 4 1/2" x 2 3/4", and it tapers from a thin edge up to just under 10 mm. It weighs 3.6 ounces, or 104.7 grams. Not quite half of the slab is less than 4 mm, as you can get an idea of from one of the photos. It has a few flaws, but still plenty of room for a number of nice cabs.

Deschutes Jasper Slab

This is a gorgeous slice of Deschutes Picture Jasper! It's a nice solid slab with great line patterns. The actual coloring is just a shade darker and richer than it looks in most of the photos. It is roughly 4" x 2 1/4 to 4" and just shy of 5 mm thick. It weighs 3.1 ounces, or 89.9 grams. Really nice piece with some great potential!

Large, Thick Picture Jasper Slab

This is a large, thick slice of Picture Jasper. It looks like it might be African Queen, but we aren't positive. It measures 7" x 5 1/4" at its widest points, and it is thick - a little over 1" thick. While not fully polished, it is very smooth and feels like it has had a degree of grinding/polishing. It's a beautiful large slice!

This is an awesome slice of China Hollow Biggs Jasper. It has a vein of Blue Chalcedony running through it, mixed with a stark white material. It has mostly a smooth surface except a pocket in the center of the largest area of Chalcedony. The size is 5 1/2" x 5" at its widest points, 7 mm thick, and weighs 210 grams, or 7.5 ounces.
